VCU student charged with murder
A VCU student is in custody after being charged with the murder of 24-year-old Jamall Holman.
The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 22 on the 2100 block of East Leigh Street. Police arrested Eric G. Driver Jr. and have charged him with second-degree murder.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 22 on the 2100 block of East Leigh Street. Police arrested Eric G. Driver Jr. and have charged him with second-degree murder. The shooting occurred Holman broke into a red Honda Civic belonging to Driver’s girlfriend.
When Driver confronted Holman, an altercation ensued and Holman was shot.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Driver’s attorney John W. Luxton said Driver’s girlfriend approached her car and found a masked man inside.
“She saw the mask and was very much alarmed. She ran and screamed for her boyfriend,” Luxton said. According to Luxton report to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Driver’s gun was legally registered in another state, and he has no prior convictions.
The eyewitness accounts from neighbors in the area conflict about whether the shooting was in self-defense. Police will not confirm if Holman carried a weapon at the time of the shooting.
According to Alicia Rasin, founder of Citizens Against Crime, Holman was raised by his grandmother, with whom he still lived. According to Rasin, Holman boasted a 4.0 GPA and was pursuing a degree in accounting at Strayer University.
“His grandmother said she will go to her grave knowing that Jamall did not have a gun, he did not rob anyone, and that someone killed her grandchild,” Rasin said.
The Richmond Commonwealth Attorney’s Office was closed Friday, and could not be reached for comment.
Driver has a bond hearing Monday. Luxton told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that Driver is hoping to be released so that he can take his final exams and graduate in May. Driver is currently taking 22 credit hours between VCU and Virginia Union University.
