A VCU student is in custody after being charged with the murder of 24-year-old Jamall Holman.
According to the Richmond Police Department, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 22. Police have arrested Eric G. Driver Jr. and charged him with second-degree murder. The shooting occurred on the 2100 block of East Leigh Street.
Holman broke into a car identified by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as belonging to Driver’s girlfriend. After Driver confronted Holman, an altercation ensued, ending in the shooting of Holman.
Eyewitness accounts conflict on whether the shooting was in self-defense, and police have declined to say if Holman was carrying a weapon.
According to Alicia Rasin, founder of Citizens Against Crime, Holman was raised by his grandmother, with whom he still lived. Rasin says Holman attended Strayer University, and at the time of his death had a 4.0 GPA.
