The recent launch of the VCU-TV/HD Web site is making it possible for viewers to watch documentary shows in high definition format – the way they were meant to be seen.

“The Web site is awesome because you can go there and watch our shows at anytime,” producer Jacob Mosholder said.

VCU-TV/HD is a television production studio staffed by student producers. The variety of shows cover topics ranging from the VCU Trauma Center at the Medical Center campus to the mat mayhem of Richmond Lucha professional wrestling.

The documentary programs are streamed from an online server that allows viewers to watch the shows in real time, rather than waiting for the entire video to be downloaded.

The Web site also allows the option of downloading each show into an individual video iPod.

“I don’t think we have spread enough word for the Web site,” producer Charles Bevan said. “I wonder if people would go onto it and enjoy watching our shows.”

Until recently, the only way for the shows to be viewed was through WCVW Richmond PBS channel 57. VCU-TV/HD is airing shows on a two-hour block every other Monday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“PBS is our friend. They help us by putting our shows on the air,” producer Kuni Ohi said.

Since it first began airing in the fall of 2006, VCU-TV/HD remains largely unknown among VCU students.

“I have heard about VCU-TV/HD, but I don’t know what it is exactly,” advertising senior Neil Causey said.

There are currently 15 shows available to view on the Web. Four more shows are premiering today on PBS. The new episodes will be available to view on the Web site after they premiere.
