Dear Editor,
The progression of global warming is proceeding at a pace that is abnormally too fast. The average global temperature has increased by nearly 1 degree Fahrenheit and scientists are anticipating an additional 2- to 6-degree increase over the next century. Although it may seem like a minimal rise in temperature, people fail to realize that the earth’s temperature was only 7 degrees colder at the climax of the last ice age than it is today. The anticipated increase in temperature over the next century could prove to be fatal to all humans on Earth if global warming is not taken into serious consideration.
Human health, ecological systems, a sea level rise, crops and food supply all have potential for disaster unless global warming is taken seriously soon. With each of these life-altering issues at risk, the human population should be eager to try to discover and use ways to prevent global warming from continuing.
One great cause of global warming is coming from the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a rise in temperature in the atmosphere that earth experiences due to different gases being emitted on earth. Gases like the exhaust from automobiles are deteriorating our atmosphere, thus further complicating this situation.
One of the main ways that we effect global warming is through the production of a gas called carbon dioxide. When you are either gassing up your car or using oil to produce electricity, you are slowly but surely ruining your environment. Scientists must innovate to find new ways to produce energy in order to prevent global warming. Outside of that way, there is another way to prevent global warming – the decrease of deforestation. Dense wood areas are a great filter of carbon dioxide. By planting seeds in your local community, you can offer a great help in the struggle to end global warming.
As a people, it is our job to protect and preserve this planet because if we don’t, Earth’s extreme change in climate will end the race of mankind. I personally think that we as people are a destructive force to this world. If we do not start to work together now, there will be a catastrophic event in the future for our children.
