Opinion in Brief: Register to Vote
Midterm elections. Like the Super Bowl halftime show or commercials between our favorite TV shows, we may think they don’t matter. We tend to skip over things we think aren’t important to get to the good stuff. But not paying attention in 2003 meant missing Janet Jackson’s exposed nipple, and some commercials are can’t-miss entertainment.

So goes this election. If by now you haven’t heard what “macaca” is, Google it. It has made Virginia’s U.S. Senate race one of the most closely watched in the nation. George Allen, the incumbent and once a presidential contender, has now been reduced to fighting for his seat while deadlocked in the polls. In such a close race, every vote will count.
No matter where you live, you have a choice. All 11 of Virginia’s U.S. House seats are up for grabs, with challengers running in even the most gerrymandered of districts.
The deadline to register to vote in Virginia is next Friday, Oct. 10. As Sean Penn’s character said in All the King’s Men, “If you don’t vote, you don’t matter.”
