Break bread without breaking the bank
Richmond’s newest arrival, Panera Bread Co., has brought the crowd back to the Shoppes at Willow Lawn. It’s hard to find healthy fare at a reasonable price these days, but Panera offers some unique combinations and twists on old favorites, all for under $10! Their famous bread is baked fresh throughout the day and comes in seven aromatic varieties, but that’s not all they’re famous for.

The sandwiches are absolutely delectable. They can be topped with anything you like or you can try one of their creative sandwiches. If you’re looking for something even lighter, try one of their fresh salads or a cup or a bowl of their homemade soups, available in regular or low-fat. Once you’re done ordering from the friendly staff, you can pick up a side of chips, an apple or a block of their fresh French baguette. All items can be purchased in a half or whole portion, including soups!
In addition to their food, Panera has a premiere selection of freshly brewed coffees and hot and iced tea. Drinks range from $2 to $5 and come in three sizes. For my lunch, I ordered a half size grilled steak and Gorgonzola salad with a cup of low-fat, homemade chicken noodle soup. I picked a fresh and crisp Gala apple, and for my drink I chose their iced green tea.
After paying a mere $9.55, I was given a pager and rummaged through the Sunday crowd to grab a quaint little booth. All of Panera’s seating is unique. Whether it is a long table for a party of 20 or a booth for one, each seat provides a different experience. Once my pager beeped and my name was called on the loudspeaker, I walked up to the counter and was greeted by the staff who prepared my food.
The food’s presentation was high-class and minimalist, which kept it simple and appetizing. I unwrapped my fork from my napkin like a Christmas present and started munching.
The combination of the smoky steak flavor and the tangy Gorgonzola cheese was delicious. To add even more flair, there were walnuts and fresh herbs tossed in the mix. My soup was not that hot, but it was scrumptious because of all the fresh veggies incorporated with the chunks of white chicken and intense, herb-infused broth. My Gala apple was fresh and had a juicy crunch to it; it was the perfect end to this meal.
At Panera, the portions are just right; not so much that you have to loosen the belt and not so little that you’re left hungry. As I picked up my tray to throw away my trash, their staff quickly wiped down my table and it was ready for the next customer to be delighted. I had plenty of their yummy green tea to sip on while I was driving home, and it felt good to be able to eat healthy while eating out. Try Panera for healthy food that’s fast at a great price!
