The Rams (7-1-0 CAA, 11-4-1) no lead the CAA outright after James Madison (6-2-0, 14-2-1) dropped a 2-1 decision to Hofstra. Each team has a game left, and if they should finish the season tied, the Dukes, who beat VCU 3-1 earlier this season at Sports Backers Stadium, hold the tiebreaker.
The Rams could clinch their third straight CAA regular season championship and lock up home field for the semifinal and championship games of the CAA tournament with a win next Saturday over UNC Wilmington.
James Madison finishes their season with a game against George Mason (3-4-0, 7-9-1), which has lost seven of its past eight games.
In other CAA games:
Hofstra 2, James Madison 1: The Pride jumped ahead of James Madison early with first-half goals from juniors Michael Todd and Jason Gates to knock the Dukes from the top spot in the CAA. Denny Fulk scored JMU’s only goal, a header from about 10-yards out about two minutes into the second half, but Pride keeper Matthias Gumbrecht shut the Dukes down with most of his five saves coming in the second half.
UNC Wilmington 3, Delaware 0: After Russell Bienias put the Seahawks ahead early, the team used second-half goals from Chris Murray and Columb Grant to pull away from the Blue Hens and win 3-0. The Seahawks (11-5-1, 5-3 CAA) handed the Blue Hens (4-12-1, 1-8 CAA) a loss in their final home game. Delaware ended the season on a three-game losing streak.
Drexel 1, George Mason 0: Joe Banks headed a corner kick from Domonick Balsama past Patriots keeper John O’Hara with less than a minute left in the second overtime to give the Dragons (2-6-0, 5-11-0) a win in their final game of the season.
