A week after the VCU women’s field hockey team closed out their season with a win against Appalachian State University on Nov. 2, a trio of Rams garnered Atlantic-10 honors.
Senior Kendell Combs was named to the A-10 Second Team. Combs led the team in scoring with 10 goals and one assist on the year. Combs finishes her collegiate career tied for 12th all-time in goals with 21, ninth all-time in points (62), and tied for seventh in assists (20).
Senior Nicole Barry was named to the A-10 All-Academic team. The honor is bestowed on student athletes with exceptional grade point averages. Barry maintained a 3.905 while starting every game on the defensive end.
Freshman standout Spencer Tossone was recognized by the A-10, earning All-Rookie honors after recording two goals and three assists this season.
Made on Thursday, Nov. 6, the announcements came after the Rams ended their season on a winning note against Appalachian State University on Sunday, Nov. 2.
In the senior’s final game, Combs netted the equalizer almost 20 minutes after Appalachian State scored for the Rams to enter the break 1-1.
Although the Mountaineers would respond out the half with a goal in the 41st minute, the Rams would shut out the opposing team for the remainder of the game. Freshman forward Jamee Albright recorded the next two goals for the Rams almost 10 minutes apart and junior Kendall Farino grabbed her first score of the season off of a penalty corner, for the team to win with a final score of 4-2.
It’s been a tumultuous season for head coach Laura Baker’s team. The team finished with a 5-13 record and one win in A-10 conference play. Still, Baker was happy that the team could rally in the final game and send their seniors off in style.
“Our seniors deserved to go out on a win today and we are so happy that we could honor them in this way,” Baker said.
