A majority of this past Thursday’s issues of The Commonwealth Times were stolen off news stands sometime between Thursday at 11 a.m. and mid-afternoon. The executive and managing editors have filed a report with VCU police. The culprit or culprits remain unidentified. Newspaper theft is considered censorship.
Total damages equal $1,700. According to the Student Press Law Center, possible charges include grand larceny, petty theft, criminal mischief and destruction of property.
Greg Weatherford, director of VCU student media, issued a statement saying, “I’m disappointed and disturbed that anyone would attempt and strike a blow for free speech by attempting to muzzle the speech of others. This is a crime; but it’s not only a crime, it’s morally wrong and undemocratic.”
