BASEBALL

Dropped the series finale against Western Kentucky, 12-8, this past Sunday. Freshman Taylor Perkins (Dinwiddie/Dinwiddie) and junior Nathan Furry (Salem/Salem) led the Rams with three hits, including his first homerun of the season. Furry hit his first homerun of the season.

Perkins led the Rams with three RBI. The Rams dropped to 10-10 with loss. VCU starts a home series against Hofstra Friday at 7 p.m. at The Diamond.

MEN’S TENNIS

Fell to 11-8 with a 5-1 loss to SMU this past Sunday. Freshman Filip Svensson (Angelholm, Sweden) won his seventh singles match of the season, 6-2, 6-2. With the loss, VCU falls to 11-8. The Rams host Louisville Friday at 10 a.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Lost a close match to Boston University, 4-3, this past Sunday. Junior Olena Leonchuk (Kiev, Ukraine) posted her tenth-straight singles victory, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Mihaela Bunea (Bucharest, Romainia) and junior Laura Burns (Hertford, England) both won their 18th match of the season. This past Monday, the Rams defeated William and Mary, 4-3. Leonchuk increased her winning streak to 11 singles victories in a row by winning 7-6 (4), 6-0. Burns and Alex Bara (Oradea, Romania) won their singles matches. VCU’s record stands at 15-6. The Rams host Louisville at the Thalhimer Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Burns was named CAA Co-Player of the Week. Burns went 2-0 in her singles matches last week. On March 29, Burns defeated Boston University’s Petra Santini, 6-3, 6-2. On March 31, Burns beat Klaudyna Kasztelaniec of William and Mary, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Junior Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) secured a spot in the NCAA East Regionals by winning the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:57.16 at the Fred Hardy Invitational this past weekend. Dybas’ time was 10 seconds faster than his personal best and the qualifying time for the regionals. Sophomore Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth/I.C. Norcom) won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.90 and finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.94. Norvell also teamed with sophomore Brandon Allen (Trenton, N.J.), sophomore Allan Moody (Woodbridge/Garfield) and Kyle Jones to win the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 41.83. Norvell along with sophomore Donnie Seward (Richmond/Huguenot), junior DeAngelo Wilson (Richmond, Prince Edward County) and Brice Matthews to finish second in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.91. Wilson and junior Jamal Blyden (Virginia Beach/Landstown) finished second and third in the 200-meter dash with times of 21.95 and 22.24, respectively. Allen took third in the 100-meter dash (11.08) and long jump (6.70 meters). Sophomore Brian Wallace (Portsmouth/I.C. Norcom) finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 14.28 meters.
