Classy theater puts on the Ritz

For a long time, my biggest complaint about Richmond was the lack of movie theaters within the city limits (aside from The Byrd Theatre, of course). But since last Friday’s opening of Bow-Tie Cinema’s Movieland at Boulevard, I’ve had to find something else to complain about.

For a long time, my biggest complaint about Richmond was the lack of movie theaters within the city limits (aside from The Byrd Theatre, of course). But since last Friday’s opening of Bow-Tie Cinema’s Movieland at Boulevard, I’ve had to find something else to complain about.

Is it perfect? Of course not. Aesthetically, the building is on par with apartments in Gladding Residence Center. It literally is a hollowed out warehouse stuffed with 17 screens. And the much hyped bar? Nothing more than a corner of the lobby, cordoned off with rope, where they sell plastic cups of Miller Lite for $5 (they sell other drinks too).

Then what makes it awesome? It is a movie theater, in Richmond, and, comparatively, it’s cheap. With a student ID, it costs only $8 a show (to put that in perspective, it is only fifty cents more than a 12 pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon BR from Lombardy Market). Also, you can join the Criterion Club for free, which allows you to purchase $6 movie tickets on Tuesdays.
