When enforcement officials check the parking decks and see no decal they cite the tag number of the vehicle. Thus, the information students call in immediately will be checked in the computer system to ensure that they are subscribers who forgot their decals.

Though this procedure has been VCU’s long-standing policy, sophomore sculpture student Michael Smith was unaware it exists. Smith, a Main Street Deck subscriber last year, said the policy would have been helpful had he known about it because he received two tickets after forgetting his decal.

Smith appealed his citations, which were dropped. He said the appeals process became an easy one for him.

“All you have to do is go on the Web site and fill out the online form,” he said. “You wait like two weeks or so, and they mail you a letter of either confirmation that the ticket was removed or that you owe them money.”

Paul Perdue, a junior majoring in Spanish and chemistry, said he too wished he had known about the policy. Perdue, another Main Street Deck subscriber, received a ticket after he misplaced his decal. He didn’t know about the policy until it was too late, but after appealing the citation it was dropped.

“We’re really good about looking at what the circumstances are. We’re not looking to make money off tickets,” said Gregory Rentz, manager of the parking and transportation office.

Rentz said the office is not trying to penalize anyone. It simply doesn’t want subscribers forgetting their decals, which ensure they have a parking space.

Students forgetting their decals should call 828-0501.
