Women’s soccer at Loyola University Maryland

VCU easily took control in a contest against the Loyola Greyhounds. The Rams finished the game 2-0 with third-year forward Jensyn Lins scoring the first goal of the match within two minutes of the first half, according to VCU Athletics. Lins had an impressive game, scoring the first goal and assisting the second for VCU. This also marked the first win for VCU head coach Lauryn Hutchinson.

Women’s volleyball vs. Ohio State University

VCU devastated the Ohio State Buckeyes in its season opener with a 3-0 victory. VCU fourth-year opposite Julia Rienks and second-year outside hitter Lara Del Core combined for a monster total of 24 kills, according to VCU Athletics. The Rams outscored the Buckeyes in kills 42-35, earning the Rams a well-fought win.

Field hockey at Old Dominion University

VCU field hockey faced off against Old Dominion in a fierce battle. The Rams managed to come back against the Monarchs after trailing 1-0 in the first quarter. VCU fourth-year midfielder Morena Macera helped seal the 3-2 win, scoring three goals on only four shot attempts, according to VCU Athletics. The hat trick marks a career high for Macera, with her third shot being fired in overtime and ending the Monarchs’ hopes of beating the Rams.

Men’s soccer at Old Dominion

The VCU men’s soccer team has broken free from its two-game losing streak, besting Old Dominion 2-1. Though ODU led the first half, VCU dominated with its possession, controlling the ball 60% of the match, according to VCU Athletics. One standout player was second-year midfielder Mohammed Ibrahim, who scored for the Rams in the 87th minute of the match. 

Women’s volleyball vs. Indiana University

After beating Ohio State, VCU continued its march in the Canes Classic, but its efforts weren’t enough after falling 3-0 against Indiana University. Indiana seemed unstoppable as it recorded 10 blocks to VCU’s five, according to VCU Athletics. VCU’s Reinks held her ground against Indiana’s attacks. Reinks had two blocks, one ace and a total of 10 kills.

Cross country at the Spider Alumni Open

VCU placed No. 9 out of 14 in the Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park in Hanover County, Virginia. VCU had five Rams finish the 4k in the top 100 of the race. Three of those Rams were first-years in their collegiate debut. VCU first-year Viktoria Higgins had the fastest time of the Rams, running a 14:46.8 and placing 42nd, according to VCU Athletics

Field hockey vs. Northwestern

VCU hosted Northwestern University, the 2024 NCAA D1 field hockey champions on Sept. 1 at Cary Street Field. The Rams struggled offensively, only getting off one shot, compared to the Wildcats 23 shots, with 15 on target. VCU fought hard, especially redshirt second-year goalkeeper Emma Clements who was able to stop 11 shots from Northwestern. Northwestern third-year Aerin Krys had an impressive match, finishing with one goal and one assist.
