After a 17-win improvement last season, women’s basketball was tabbed to win the Atlantic 10 in Tuesday’s preseason poll, receiving 11 of the 14 first-place votes.

This marks the first time in program history that the Rams were the preseason favorites in the A-10. Last season, women’s basketball earned the No. 1 seed in the A-10 tournament and appeared in the A-10 championship game.

The Rams, who had no seniors last season, return their entire starting five, including First-Team A-10 junior guard Tera Reed.

VCU’s defense was among the top in the country last season, ranking in the top 10 in scoring defense, 3-point defense and field goal percentage defense.

The Rams open the season at home Nov. 5 against Appalachian State at 11 a.m.
