The James Branch Cabell library begins construction on its $50.8 million expansion project this weekend. Construction crews will redirect traffic around the east side of the building to build a temporary entrance beginning Friday, Feb. 7, said Sue Robinson, a VCU Libraries spokesperson, in an email.
The library is expected to develop renovations to the Monroe Park building over the next few months.
The new design of the library involves an addition of 93,000 square feet to the current 180,000 square-foot building.
The expansion will allow for 40 additional study rooms and a more than doubled seating capacity. The Starbucks will also double in size, becoming the second-largest campus Starbucks in the country with 50 seats. The new additions will open in 2015.
