Men’s basketball wins at Rhode Island

The VCU men’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Rhode Island 70-64 in the teams’ first meeting as Atlantic 10 opponents.
After leading by just one at the half, the Rams outscored the Rhodys 41-36 in the second half on the back of Juvonte Reddic’s third straight double-double. The junior power forward/center from Winston-Salem, N.C. had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and hit all six of his free throw attempts. Seven of Reddic’s rebounds came on the offensive end, and 16 of his points came in the second half.
Sophomore Treveon Graham also had a big game for VCU, leading all scorers with 19 points. He pulled down eight rebounds and got to the free throw line 11 times, eight of which he converted on.
With the win, VCU is 17-5 overall and 5-2 in the A-10. The Rams went 7-2 in January games. They host Fordham at the Siegel Center in their homecoming game Saturday at 7 p.m., continuing conference play.
Women’s hoops loses to No. 17 Dayton

The VCU women’s basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss Friday night at the Siegel Center, falling 60-49 to No. 17 Dayton.
Andrea Hoover and Cassie Sant each recorded double-doubles in the win for the Flyers. Hoover led her team with 15 points, and Sant scored 12 while they each added 10 rebounds.
Dayton’s offense started the game firing on all cylinders and held an 18-point halftime lead, but the Rams battled back and outscored the Flyers 30-23 in the second half. Robyn Parks and Adaeze Alaeze combined for 25 second half points for VCU as the comeback attempt came up short.
Parks led all scorers with 17 total points and also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Alaeze stuffed the Rams’ stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals.
With the loss the Rams drop to 8-13 overall, with a 1-5 mark in the Atlantic 10. The team travels to New York City to face Fordham on Saturday for homecoming in its next game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
