CAA Player of the Week

Taylor Morgan, Jr., F, George Mason

Morgan did more than his share in helping George Mason post a 1-0-1 record against two nationally ranked opponents last week. The Southampton, England native scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 69th minute to help the Patriots hand No. 24 Cal State-Fullerton its first loss of the season. The junior also helped George Mason by scoring its lone goal in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against No. 8 Central Florida.

CAA Rookie of the Week

Roberto Gimenez, So., F, Delaware

The sophomore forward recorded a career-high six points on two goals and two assists in the Blue Hens’ 5-3 road victory at Navy last week. He scored both goals in a five-minute span in the early stages of the second half to put Delaware ahead 3-1. After a Midshipmen comeback, Gimenez assisted the Blue Hens’ final two goals in the victory.

CAA notes

  • After starting the season 4-0, Old Dominion is ranked No. 15 on the NSCAA Coaches Poll. The Monarchs have collected 228 points and have moved into the slot from their previous placing of 21.
  • Continuing with CAA teams gaining national recognition, five CAA teams were among the top 10 in the South Atlantic region rankings released by the NSCAA on Sept. 19. Old Dominion is ranked No. 3, William & Mary is No. 4, George Mason is No. 7 and Northeastern and VCU are tied at No. 9. Delaware and Georgia State received votes.
  • Saturday marks the first full slate of CAA games that will take place in the 2011 season.
  • Delaware is off to its best start since 1985 after beating Navy and Columbia last week. The Blue Hens have now won seven straight games dating back to September of last year.
  • VCU fell to UAB and Gardner-Webb at UAB’s Soccer for a Cure Tournament last weekend, but didn’t go away empty-handed. Two players, senior defender Nick Rich and sophomore midfielder Romena Bowie, received all-tournament honors.
  • Old Dominion has been making quite a splash in the national spotlight lately as a team and individually. Sophomore forward Tim Hopkinson was selected as the Disney Sports/NSCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 13. Hopkinson registered two goals and an assist in the Monarchs’ victories over No. 19 East Tennessee State and No. 13 Monmouth at the Stihl Soccer Classic. Hopkinson’s feat comes as the second time a CAA player has ever earned National Player of the Week honors after William & Mary’s Nicolas Abrigo received the award on Sept. 6.
