Students who attended The Great Bike Round-Up in the University Student Commons Plaza Wednesday were able to receive free bike tune-ups and register their bikes with VCU Police, but university department hosts say the biannual event aids the student initiative to go green.
The Student Affairs & Enrollment Services and University Student Commons & Activities departments hosted the bike round up.
Martha Harper, the off campus student services coordinator said it is part of her office’s job to promote alternative transportation for students.
“Certainly, we know the impact of cars on campus and all of the problems that brings,” Harper said. “So, anything we can do to sort of promote walking, riding a bike, riding the bus – we do.”
Harper said the event is to show appreciation for those who choose to put the pedal to the metal instead of stomping on the gas pedal. She said her office coordinates with local bike repair shops to provide mechanics for the round up.
This year, two mechanics – one from Pibby’s Bicycle Repair and another from Bunnyhop Bicycle Shop – gave tune ups.
Luke Stevens from Bunnyhop said this was not his first time participating in the event. In past years, he said most students have problems with their tires, the majority do not keep their tires properly filled, which can lead to flat tires and more strain on the wheels.
Ibrahim Ahmad, a sophomore pre-med chemistry major said as a Pi Kappa Alpha member he tries to attend and support all VCU-related events, and the round up was a great opportunity for student bike riders.
“It promotes bike riding, which is not only healthy but it’s better for the environment,” Ahmad said.
