Supporters for gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds rallied Thursday at the headquarters on Broad street. Mayor Dwight Jones and Sen. Henry L. Marsh, III both gave speeches.

It was a muggy Thursday evening but that didn’t dampen the spirits in the Sen. Creigh Deeds campaign headquarters. Along the wall to the right of the entrance, campaign signs were arranged to spell D-E-E-D-S. The crowd filled the building, from college students to senior citizens.

Gov. Tim Kaine, the intended main speaker, was held up at the airport greeting soldiers returning from Iraq and could not attend. Mayor Dwight Jones and Sen. Henry L. Marsh, III both gave speeches. Jones said a victory for Deeds would represent a victory for President Barack Obama as well. He said a victory for nominee Bob McDonnell would only be a step backward for Virginia.

“We can’t stay still; we have to move forward,” Deeds supporter Rev. Shirley Friend said. Jones told the audience of his time serving in the General Assembly with gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell.

“The thesis is only the tip of the iceberg. It may have been 20 years since it was written but for the last 20 years, he’s been working on making it a reality,” Jones said.

Jones highlighted policy differences in Deeds and McDonnell’s campaigns including education and transportation. The audience received his words enthusiastically with cheers and clapping.
