A Richmond Police Department cruiser collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Franklin and Harrison streets at around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Dionne Waugh, spokeswoman for the Richmond Police Department reported that there were no critical injuries to either of the drivers. The driver of the civilian vehicle had minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Abbey Phillips, another driver who was stopped at the intersection, said the police car had its sirens on and lights flashing. Phillips said the police car did not stop at the intersection, where the officer had a red light. The civilian driver had a green light and proceeded to drive through. The officer’s front bumper collided with the civilian driver’s rear left passenger door.

Phillips said the firemen had some trouble retrieving the civilian driver from the car and reportedly told her “not to fall asleep.” The scene of the crash was investigated by the RPD. Officers taped off the entire intersection, took pictures of both cars and examined debris and marks on the road at the focal point of the crash.

Waugh said that the investigation is still ongoing as the RPD continues interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene.
