BASEBALL

The Rams crushed Canisius this past Tuesday, 12-2. Junior Richard Gonzalez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/PRBA) led the Rams in hits and RBIs with three. Sophomore Joe Van Meter (Oyster Bay, N.Y./St. Dominic) hit his first home run of the season. Freshman Ryan Crosby (Broad Run/Notre Dame Academy), sophomore Anthony Askey (Manassas/Osbourn Park) and juniors Philip Deane (Richmond/Varina) and Darryl Stringfield (Wakefield/Sussex Central) combined to give up two runs and three hits.

The win improved the Rams’ record to 9-4. VCU travels to Wilmington, N.C. to take on UNC Wilmington in a three game series beginning Friday.

Blake Hauser (Midlothian/Manchester) was named a Preseason All-American by Rawlings Sporting Goods and Perfect Game USA.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Rams received an at-large bid to their first NCAA Tournament in school history. VCU received a No. 10 seed in the Oklahoma City region and will be taking on No. 7 Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. Saturday.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Rams defeated St. Mary’s this past Sunday, 5-2. Freshmen Alex Bara (Oradea, Romania) and Ana Bara (Oradea, Romania) defeated No. 52-ranked duo of Alexandra Poorta and Claire Soper, 8-2. Alex Bara also won her singles match. Freshman Mihaela Bunea (Bucharest, Romania), sophomore Kateryna Yergina (Kiev, Ukraine) and junior Olena Leonchuk (Kiev, Ukraine) won their singles matches. VCU earned its fourth straight victory and improved its record to 13-5. The Rams return to action Sunday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center against UNC Greensboro.

The Mid-Atlantic Professional Tennis Association named VCU head coach Paul Kostin 2008 coach of the year. Kostin, a former national coach of the year, led the men’s and women’s team to the NCAA Tournament in 2008.
