The women’s basketball team is adding another focus to this Sunday’s game against James Madison.
People who attend the game will be asked to donate to the Think Pink campaign to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Organizers will put pink donation envelopes on each seat at the Siegel Center.
The first 250 fans will receive pink breast cancer awareness bracelets and 200 fans will receive a pink T-shirt. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink on Sunday rather than black and gold.
The Rams are dedicating the game to Dr. Chinwe M. Agugua, mother of Amaka Agugua, an assistant coach of the women’s basketball team.
Agugua died of breast cancer in October. She was “a true mentor and our spokeswoman,” said graduate assistant Ashley Bolton.
The fundraiser will be sponsored by Massey Cancer Center.
“We’re wearing VCU across our chest and fighting for every loose ball, but there’s just nobody in the stands,” said Darren Guensch, director of women’s basketball operations.
At the game against Old Dominion game, two weeks ago, 2,437 people attended-a record for a women’s basketball game at the Siegel Center.
“We put a lot of commitment and passion into playing basketball and being No. 1, so it will be awesome to break another attendance record,” said Radoslava Bachvarova, a senior forward for the Rams.
Senior Eric Maynor, of the men’s basketball team, says he attends the women’s games “every time I get a chance.”
“If you’re a fan, then you should be coming out,” he said.
