The CT Sports Editor sounds off: JONATHAN SAYS
College basketball
You’ve got to give a nod to the guys in
charge of this past weekend’s SEC men’s
basketball tournament. Choosing basketball
over money when moving the remaining
games to Georgia Tech and not allowing
fans to attend were great moves. I know
what you’re thinking: “Why is it great if
fans can’t get into games they paid for?”
Well, here’s the thing-whether people
like it or not, the decision was about the
teams, not the fans. I’m OK with it as long
as the good folks who paid for tickets are
reimbursed in some way. Finishing up the
games in a timely fashion without a doubt
takes precedence over ensuring Kentucky
fans witness another defeat.
Georgia coach Dennis Felton was
correct in saying that playing two games
in one day because of the circumstances
was difficult-but coach Felton should
not have complained. For starters, after
winning only four conference games all
year, it was a miracle the Bulldogs made
it as far as they did. Secondly – as the
guys at ESPN pointed out – with kids
participating in AAU programs these days,
players often times are used to playing more
than one game per day. After the way the
Bulldogs responded to the circumstances,
maybe Felton should consider scheduling
doubleheaders in the future.
NBA
The other day, I turned on sports
radio and heard something that absolutely
baffled me. People had the nerve to say the
Houston Rockets’ 20-game winning streak
(at the time) was not impressive because
the Rockets “had not played anybody”
during the stretch. I couldn’t help but
laugh at how absurd these remarks were.
Folks-as bad as some teams are, need I
remind you that the NBA is a professional
league? The NBA is composed of the best
players in the world. This isn’t like high
school or college where a team can go on
long winning streaks by playing inferior
talent. Every individual in the league can
be considered one of the best players in
the world (Yes, even Darko). These guys
are paid to play, and while there are bad
teams in the league, they aren’t going to
lose every night (OK, maybe Miami and
Charlotte are capable of this feat). The point
is-in a league of professionals, it’s rare to
see such a long winning streak. These guys
play multiple games every week and travel
constantly. Their streak is easily one of the
top feats of the sports year thus far.
