WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
VCU lost for the third time in five games Thursday at home against
UNC Wilmington, 64-58. The Rams committed 25 turnovers that led
to 26 Seahawk points and played the game’s final 11:13 without junior
Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great Bridge), who injured herself
on a defensive rebound. The team bounced back Sunday at Georgia State
for a 76-43 win. The Rams jumped to a 13-3 lead over the Panthers
and never looked back. Senior Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md./ Lake
Clifton-Eastern) scored a game-high 18 points. Freshman Jessica Taylor
(Northumberland/Woodbridge) and senior Vera Chistova (St. Petersburg,
Russia) scored their first points of the season. The Rams are 19-5 overall
and 9-4 in the CAA.
MEN’S TENNIS
The Rams took to the court Saturday for the first time since rising to
No. 20 in the nation and beat defending conference champion Georgia
State 5-2. VCU swept all three doubles matches, as well as singles play
on Courts 2 through 5. Thirty-third-ranked Damien Lacombe (Perigueux,
France) defeated Anze Cevka, 6-0, 6-1. The win was the fourth in a
row for the Rams, who are now 8-1 this season.
