WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Rams improved to 3-0 Sunday with a 54-47 victory over Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia. Center Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/ Great Bridge) registered her 27th career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Krsyal Vaughn (Baltimore/Lake Clifton- Eastern) had another big game for the Rams as well, posting 17 points and nine rebounds.

Vaughn (Baltimore/Lake Clifton-
Eastern) had another big game for
the Rams as well, posting 17 points
and nine rebounds. The Hawks led
26-22 at halftime, but could not
hold the lead at the end. The Rams
trailed 45-44 with 3:56 to go in the
game when Hollingsworth grabbed a
rebound and made a lay-up that gave
VCU a 46-45 lead and sparked a 12-2
run to close out the game.
IN OTHER NEWS
Coach Beth Cunningham signed
three recruits during the early signing
period. Courtney Hurt (Conyers,
Ga./Salem), a 6-1 power forward, has
averaged 20 points per game during
her high school career and averaged
14 rebounds last season. Chelsea
Snyder (Grendall, N.J./Newton), a
6’6 center, will add more size to the
already tall VCU frontcourt. Snyder
averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds
per game last season. Jennifer Lane
(Wichita, Kan./Wichita Heights) is a
5’8 point guard that will immediately
add quality depth to the backcourt.
Lane has helped lead Wichita Heights
High School to the state championship
three years in a row, with two of
those trips resulting in victories. She
currently holds the Wichita Heights
career record for assists.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Rams’ season came to a close
on Friday night after a 2-1 defeat at
the hands of Old Dominion in the
semifinals of the CAA tournament
on Friday night. The Monarchs got
on the board first with a goal from
12 yards out in the 25th minute.
However, Owusu Sekyere (Suame-
Kumasi, Ghana/Opoku Ware) evened
the score for VCU in the 40th
minute when he lofted a shot over
the keeper’s head at the top of the
18-yard box. The score remained
tied until the 77th minute, when Old
Dominion’s A.J. Kulp scored from
the middle of the field, 20 yards out,
to give the Monarchs the lead for
good. VCU finished the season with
a record of 12-6-2.
IN OTHER NEWS
Six players were named to All-CAA
teams last week during the conference
banquet. Junior Gerson Dos Santos
(Sao Paulo, Brazil/E.E. Ruth Cabral
Troncarelli) was named first team
All-CAA while Jorit Loehr (Bremen,
Germany), Dirk Dittirch (Stuttgart,
Germany/Quenstedt-Gymnasium)
and Sven Meusch (Cologne, Germany)
were named to the second
team. Seniors Matthijs Maruanaya
(Alkmaar, Netherlands/Willem Blaeu)
and Pat Viray (Reston/South Lakes)
were named to the third team.
VOLLEYBALL
Two Rams players earned All-
CAA honors, as announced by
the conference last week. Libero
Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba,Brazil/
Colegio Dom Bosco) was named
third team All-CAA, while freshman
Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil/
Colegio Dourado) was named to the
all-rookie team.
