As the not-too-distant 2008 presidential race heats up, the Republican Party is preparing for what many political insiders are saying will be a battle for Virginia’s electoral votes.
The GOP has arranged for an all-star team of Republicans – several of whom are presidential hopefuls – to rally conservative support in the commonwealth, beginning Feb. 26 with a fundraiser in Vienna featuring presidential contender and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
From March to May, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, presidential runner and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez also will visit strategic hotspots throughout Northern Virginia, where votes are rich and increasingly Democratic-leaning. The stopovers are part of what the Republican Party of Virginia is breezily calling its “2007 Spring Fling Series.”
The dates have not been set, but other confirmed guests of the series include Sen. John McCain of Arizona, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow and former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.
