Thank you for your contribution, Mr. Raftery.

I’m quite flattered, I assure you, if not slightly weirded out. I enjoy that someone out there reads the Opinion section. I also enjoy that someone I’ve never heard of would read my Facebook profile to look for things to say about me.

But let’s not get too far from the point here:

You see, Mr. Raftery, I publish what I receive, and rarely do I make the decision not to print something. In fact, that has happened only one time under my watch, and it was with just cause. The piece in question involved the graphic display of dead children. If it is to your dismay that I run articles that tilt toward the right of the political spectrum, it is only because I have received little from the other. I am quite confident that is a failure on the behalf of the students who you claim represent the “true voice” of VCU. If this voice is so weak and unfocused that it fails to even provide me with material to publish, that isn’t my problem.

Do you raise legitimate points of contention? Yes. As a homeland security and philosophy major with an interest in domestic and international affairs, that is the sort of dialogue I enjoy. However, you do yourself a severe disservice when you fallaciously criticize me, my likes and interests, and then go on to slyly misconstrue selections from my pieces to make your point. In a true “academic” setting, Mr. Raftery, that sort of behavior is often frowned upon. I see you failed to miss some subtleties within what I have published, as well.

Thanks,
