Senior B.A Walker (Onancock, Va./Nandua) led the VCU attack with 24 points (five 3-pointers), while Jamal Shuler (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville) scored 17. Jesse Pellot-Rosa (Richmond, Va./George Wythe) scored 14 and Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) added eight points and 10 assists.
VCU’s fast start has caught on nationally. CollegeInsider.com has ranked the Rams No. 2 in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll. VCU is behind Butler University, which received 30 of the 31 first-place votes in the poll. The ESPN/USA Today and AP polls rank VCU 33 overall.
MEN’S TENNIS
VCU finished the 4 X 1 Invitational with two more sweeps on Sunday. In the first match, VCU beat 66th-ranked East Tennessee State 3-0. They followed that with a 5-0 victory over CAA rival George Mason.
MEN’S BASEBALL
Paul Keyes’ squad has been voted the preseason favorite to win the CAA, according to a vote of the league’s head baseball coaches. The Rams return seven of eight starting position players from last year’s team which finished 34-24. Baseball season begins on Saturday, Feb. 10, when Longwood comes to town.
