‘Lost boys’ of Sudan among VCU students

Together with the African Student Union, the Intercultural Festival on April 6 ushered in a discussion group of some of the young men known as the “lost boys” of Sudan. The term was coined after their 1987 flight from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia. They then fled from Ethiopia to refugee camps in Kenya.

“We were called the ‘lost boys’ because no one knew where we were,” said junior Maker Marial, one of the Sudanese refugees. “We thought our parents were dead.”

Senior Minh Trang Ngo, ICF Week programming coordinator, said she was happy with the turnout for the discussion.
