Geometry Park provides solace for Fan residents

It is sometimes difficult to find a place to one’s self. In the Fan district, there are only a few parks that aren’t littered with children or bums (which is worse, I’m not sure). However, a few weeks ago I found a spot that I could get to with only a short walk that was hidden away from society and everything in it.

However, a few weeks ago I found a spot that I could get to with only a short walk that was hidden away from society and everything in it.

Affectionately called “Geometry Park” by some, this locale is placed rather oddly down an alley connecting Allen and Vine streets, about a block from Grove Avenue. Had I not literally been led there, I would have never known about it; it’s almost unnoticeable from the main road and surrounded by houses and apartments.

The park itself is rather unorthodox, as far as playgrounds go. Instead of normal equipment – slides, swings, teeter-totters – there are several large stone structures shaped to look more like an abstract piece of art than actual things to play on. There are plenty of things to climb and sit on that give a decent view into the alley and the surrounding neighborhood.

In all the times I’ve gone to Geometry Park, I’ve hardly ever seen anyone else. Even those who live in the apartments around it seem to ignore it.

However, it is the isolation that makes the park sublime. There are shady trees and cool concrete, and it is perfect for having a smoke, reading or sharing a conversation with a close friend.

On many occasions, I’ve been able to go there to breathe, to celebrate or to let loose my emotions without fear of interruption.

Hidden away from the world in a nook of the Fan, Geometry Park is the ideal place to escape from everything.
