Rams drop 2 of 3 to W&M Tribe
The baseball team won the first of a three-game road series against William and Mary 5-3 Friday, but was unable keep the momentum going through the rest of the weekend.
The Rams could not maintain the pitching dominance set forth by Junior Harold Mozingo (Tappahannock/ Essex High School) in the first game, and VCU fell 10-5 and 9-0 to the Tribe on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Starting the series, Mozingo pitched a complete game and allowed only eight hits and three runs with two walks. He was able to finish the game with eight strikeouts after getting hit in the right thumb by a line drive. The injury didn’t seem to phase him, and he allowed only one hit over the final five innings.
After the Tribe added a run in the bottom of the third to their 2-0 lead, the Rams rebounded with four runs in the top of the fourth. Joe Meador (Mechanicsville/Lee-Davis High School), Nate Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) and Sergio Miranda (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) all combined to bat in the four runs.
Meador’s RBI single in the seventh provided insurance for the Rams.
The Rams scored more than five runs Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.
After jumping ahead 4-1 in the top of the third after Meador blasted a two-run homer, the Rams lead dwindled to one heading into the eighth.
The Tribe then scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to put them ahead for good.
Sunday was no better.
Freshman Jared Bolden (Lynchburg/ E.C. Glass High School) was the only player to have multiple hits as the Rams were scoreless in the loss to the Tribe. ?
