Future first-year students at VCU should expect a curriculum geared more toward academic success than that of past freshman classes, thanks to the VCU 2020 Vision for Excellence, the university’s “roadmap” for the next 15 years that, among its other plans, aims to enhance the student experience.

The VCU Board of Visitors on Thursday approved the plan, which would ensure the success of first-year students, many of whom are first-generation college students who are often unprepared for the rigors of higher education, according to a press release.

“We are guaranteeing to our students and their families that a student graduating from VCU has the skills that they need for lifelong learning, which really is what it’s all about,” Stephen D. Gottfredson, co-chair of the strategic planning commission as well as provost and vice president for academic affairs, said in the statement.

The plan also aims to strengthen the university’s research programs. VCU’s research budget has grown from $90 million in 1997 to $206 million in 2005, according to the press release, which also stated more than 600 individuals contributed to developing the plan in the past 18 months.
