Huskies shoot past Rams

BOSTON – Unable to slow down the hot-shooting Huskies, the Rams surrendered 26 points to Shawn James and 22 points to Jose Juan Barea as VCU fell in a conference game to Northeastern Saturday.

Ignoring the effects of a sprained ankle that limited him in the Rams’ win over Towson Thursday, senior forward Nick George (Manchester, England) scored a game-high 28 points and hauled in 13 rebounds.

The Rams struggled to slow the Huskies, who shot 51.8 percent from the floor. The Rams were cold in the first half, hitting only 1 of 9 3-point attempts and shooting 36.1 percent.

Despite the shooting woes, George helped make the game tight early, scoring 13 of the Rams’ first 15 points. The Huskies began to pull away and built a 27-20 lead with about 8 minutes left in the half. The Rams responded, cutting the score to 29-28 before the Huskies used an 8-2 spurt to close the half.

The Huskies continued to build on their lead out in the second half, extending the lead to 51-38 with 12 minutes left. The Rams put together an 11-2 run to close the gap to four with 8:15 remaining but could not overcome the Huskies.

Guards B.A. Walker (Onancock/Nandua High School) Alexander Harper (Columbia, S.C.) scored 15 and 13 points respectively for the Rams.
