Last April, VCU’s staff senate presented scholarship checks to seven undergraduate students, including Jaime Rodriguez, as part of the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarships inaugural reception. The scholarship checks were mainly established by funds raised to support a walk-a-thon event generating $4,000.

“I was working two jobs at the time to be able to pay for rent and other expenses, but I needed to be able to pay for this semester of school,” Rodriguez said. “So, I applied so that I would not have to work two jobs while I was still in school.”

Virginia’s Caring University Scholarships were created by the volunteer committee and Marquita Aguilar, the committee chair.

“My committee tries to do things that involve the faculty and students to help others,” Aguilar said.

The committee members hope the faculty and staff will raise even more money this time around, since the 2006 scholarships are being endorsed by VCU President Eugene P. Trani and his wife Lois E. Trani.

The scholarships are generated from donations by the faculty and staff of VCU. The donations received go toward sponsoring a participant in the walk-a-thon scheduled for April 5 and will be used to fund the scholarships.

To be eligible for the scholarship you must have at least a 2.7 grade point average, possess a need for financial assistance and work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
