WILLIAMSBURG, Jan. 20 – Sophomore guard Stephanie Merlo (Bangor, Pa.) did everything she could to rally her team, but VCU was unable to finish on top in a loss to William & Mary.
The Rams were unable to slow down Tribe player Kyra Kaylor, the conference leader in scoring and rebounding and one of the most dominant players in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Rams’ offense sputters against William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Jan. 20 – Sophomore guard Stephanie Merlo (Bangor, Pa.) did everything she could to rally her team, but VCU was unable to finish on top in a loss to William & Mary.

The Rams were unable to slow down Tribe player Kyra Kaylor, the conference leader in scoring and rebounding and one of the most dominant players in the Colonial Athletic Association. She scored a game-high 20 points and corralled 17 rebounds.

Trailing 52-48, guard Michele Cosel (Mechanicsville/ Atlee High School) drained a 3-pointer to pull the Rams within one with 27 seconds left, but they could not get closer.

Merlo scored all of her 12 points in the second half, and guard LaKea Jones (Fort Washington, Md.) chipped in 10 points. The Rams also lost the rebound battle 45-36.

George propels Rams’ victory

VCU 69, William & Mary 60

WILLIAMSBURG, Jan. 19 – Senior forward Nick George (Manchester, England) scored a season-high 29 points as VCU downed Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary.

Junior guard B.A. Walker (Onancock/Nandua High School) drilled three shots from behind the arc as the Rams jumped to a 17-3 lead 5 minutes into the game.

After the Tribe scored eight straight points, the Rams used an 11-2 run to push their lead to 28-13 wth 8:15 remaining in the half.

The Rams, who led by as many as 20, failed to make a free throw in the final 9 minutes of the game, allowing the Tribe to make it close.

The Tribe went on a 16-4 run to cut the lead to 66-58 with 2:30 left, but the Rams were able to hold on for the victory.

Walker finished with 16 points for the Rams, who remained unbeaten at home (8-0).

The Tribe dropped to 0-7 in the conference.

Taylor Mokris paced the Tribe with 14 points, and Calvin Baker added 12.
