Men’s basketball team drops ball in conference opener.

The Rams dropped their first game against an opponent in the Colonial Athletic Association Sunday, falling to UNC Wilmington 60-40. VCU set a school record for fewest points scored in a game.

The Rams pulled within two with just over a minute remaining in the first half, but the Seahawks scored the first nine points of the second half to bring the score to 39-24 and maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

The Rams dropped their first game against an opponent in the Colonial Athletic Association Sunday, falling to UNC Wilmington 60-40. VCU set a school record for fewest points scored in a game.

The Rams pulled within two with just over a minute remaining in the first half, but the Seahawks scored the first nine points of the second half to bring the score to 39-24 and maintained the lead for the rest of the game. VCU shot a mere 27.8 percent, hitting only 5 of 18 shots from the field as well as 2 of 10 shots from behind the 3-point arc.

The Seahawks, who won their first conference opener against William and Mary Wed. Nov. 30, led by as much as 23 in the game.

Junior Jesse Pellot-Rosa (Richmond/ George Wythe High School) led the Rams with 11 points, while freshman point guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C.) had a career-high five assists.

The loss puts the Rams at 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in the CAA. The team looks to get their first conference win Wed. Dec. 7, at 7:30, when Hofstra comes to the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

Women’s basketball team falls for the first time

James Madison University dominated the Rams down low, out rebounding VCU 46-30 and going on to win 69-54 Sunday.

The Rams defense was unable to stop Dukes player Tamera Young, who scored a game high 22 points.

Michele Cosel (Mechanicsville/ Atlee High School) was 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 6 from 3-point range, scoring a career-high 20 points.

Redshirt freshman Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/ Great Bridge High School) added 14 points.

Major League Soccer zeroes in on Oduro and Shirley

Seniors Dominic Oduro (Accra, Ghana) and Stephen Shirley (Carrollton, Texas) were invited to take part in the 2006 Major League Soccer Player Combine in Carson, Calif.

Former VCU standout Gonzalo Segares, an All-American defender, was the only Ram ever to be drafted by MLS. He plays for the Chicago Fire, who reached the semifinals in the MLS playoffs this past year.

A celebration of heritage

By participating in the 2005 NCAA volleyball tournament, Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz.) became just one of four members of the Navajo tribe to appear in the big dance. She is one of only seven members of the Navajo tribe to play Division I volleyball since 1986. Peterson now ranks third in VCU’s single-season record book for both blocks and hitting percentage, registering 126 and hitting .303 on the year respectively.

Her highlight of the season came when she set the second-highest mark in NCAA history for hitting percentage in a single game for players with 15 to 19 attempts when she made 17 kills on 18 attempts, earning her a .944 percentage.

VCU to retire jersey of former basketball star

VCU men’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer Kendrick Warren will be honored when VCU retires his jersey Dec. 10 during halftime of the men’s basketball game against cross-town rival University of Richmond.

Warren played from 1990 to 1994 for VCU, scoring a record 1,858 points and becoming the first player to lead the team in scoring and rebounding in four consecutive seasons.

The four-year letterwinner, who still owns the school record for most field goals made, currently plays for the Richmond Generals of the American Basketball Association.
