Walk-a-thon raised funds for undergraduate scholarship

The first official Walk-a-thon, sponsored by VCU’s Classified Staff Senate for “Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Fund,” raised more than $4,000 and drew 100 to 150 people by the end of the day.

Marquita Aguilar, special student representative in the Department of Student Accounting and Senate chair of the volunteer committee, spearheaded the April 13 event.

The first official Walk-a-thon, sponsored by VCU’s Classified Staff Senate for “Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Fund,” raised more than $4,000 and drew 100 to 150 people by the end of the day.

“We wanted to create a mechanism where we could have a walk to raise funds for (an) undergraduate scholarship,” Aguilar said. “We opened it up to faculty, staff and students – mostly our faculty and staff – and we said whatever your hearts’ desire . . . some can give more than others . . . This is a heart thing.”

Many area businesses donated goods and services to the effort. After the walk people received prizes, which included a night at The Jefferson Hotel, Richmond Braves tickets, a gift certificate from Target and a 5×7-inch portrait from Caston Studios.
