Double-double machine Lauren Hogan scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as VCU’s women’s basketball team downed the traveling allstars of Team Concept 77-63 at the Siegel Center last Thursday. The Rams finished their exhibition season 2-0 and now prepare for a road game against Belmont in Tennessee. The Bruins finished last season 14-6, but are picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Rams’ next home game will be Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. against Siena.
Verloop named CAA rookie of the year
After lighting up the conference for 20 goals in 19 games, freshman Carlot Verloop was named CAA rookie of the year. The Netherlands native, who broke the CAA’s points record with 44, was also named to the all-CAA field hockey team. Senior Casey Smith was named to the conference’s second team for the second straight year after posting a team-high 11 assists. The two led the way as VCU finished the season over .500 for the first time since 1993.
CAA player of the year: Kelly Giles, William & Mary, 14 goals and 6 assists.
CAA defensive player of the year: Amanda Warrington, Delaware, three game-winners CAA coach of the year: Peel Hawthorne, William & Mary
Hayes named new Hofstra Athletic Director
Hofstra named Jack Hayes as the replacement for former athletic director Harry Royle. Hayes joins the Pride with 14 years of experience in athletics departments at the University of Connecticut, and Fordham, Saint John’s and Fairfield universities. Hayes will be Hofstra’s seventh athletic director. His predecessor, Royle, took on a different position with the school and will handle fundraising for the athletic department as executive director of athletic development and endowment.
