This “retro-hardcore” and “ultra-packed” store is quite unique once you walk into the door. Your ears are filled with the sounds of hip-hop music and your eyes will bounce between five television sets that play anime and martial arts movies. The latest hip-hop and rap culture magazines such as Vibe, XXL and Source fill magazine shelves. Walls are coated with cell phone accessories, rap CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes available for purchase. Cell phone users can find the best service plans from providers Ntelos, Verizon and T-Mobile.
Alpha is similar to Game Stop, a video game store located on Broad Street. You can buy, sell or trade video games, game systems and DVDs at both locations. Each store offers everything for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Game Cube systems. What distinguishes Alpha from Game Stop is that 1) it’s an independent business and 2) its level of personal involvement.
“Videos games are my own passion,” store owner Alex Wilson said. With a smile and a laugh, he adds, “Keeps me out of trouble.”
In 2000, Wilson and his cousin opened a store on Sixth Street called A+J. With a new store name, location and managerial shifts, Alpha opened its doors July 2004.
