Women’s basketball reaches milestone away from home

It’s always optimal for a player or coach in athletics to achieve a meaningful milestone at home, but the scheduling stars didn’t align for VCU’s women’s basketball this weekend in that regard.
VCU junior forward – and All-American candidate – Courtney Hurt smashed the school record for points scored in a game by dropping 40 at the house of University of Missouri-Kansas City. And, by doing so, Hurt helped contribute to a 78-70 win and another milestone in the process: Nine-year head coach Beth Cunningham’s 150th win since she advanced from assistant to the top spot in 2003. Cunningham is already the most winning coach in university history.
Hurt scored 25 of her record-breaking 40 points in the second half to help the Rams win by a comfortable eight after going into the halftime intermission only up one point. The Rams moved to 2-1 on the season with the win and will return home to the Siegel Center for their next match, a showdown versus Charlotte at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
