BASEBALL
The Rams defeated Manhattan 5-3 Friday and fell to the Jaspers 18-10
Saturday in the first two games of the weekend series. Cody Eppley (Dillsburg,
Pa./Northern York) pitched a complete game in the win and struck
out seven batters. Chris Jackson (Midlothian/Manchester) and Michael
Cheatham (Chesterfield/Matoaca) drove in two runs each in the loss.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Even though the Rams were not selected to participate in the NCAA
Tournament, VCU still will play in the postseason. VCU is automatically
eligible for the NIT, because it won the CAA regular-season title. If the
Rams decide not to participate in the NIT, they also are eligible for the
newly formed College Basketball Invitational.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Despite the loss to Old Dominion in the CAA tournament, the Rams are
eligible for the postseason and will find out about the NCAA Tournament
Monday night. If the Rams are not selected, they also are eligible for the
NIT.
MEN’S TENNIS
The Rams dropped two of three matches at the Blue-Gray National Tennis
Classic held in Montgomery, Ala. No. 19 VCU defeated 48th-ranked Fresno
State 4-1 but fell to No. 25 Texas Tech 4-2 and No. 24 Oklahoma State
4-1. Damien Lacombe (Perigueux, France), ranked No. 98 in the nation
by the ITA, defeated No. 99 Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State 7-6, 6-1 in the
weekend’s best victory. VCU’s record now stands at 12-5.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Rams split a pair of matches played in Las Vegas this past weekend.
The 38th-ranked Rams dropped No. 42 UNLV 4-3 but fell by the same
score to No. 25 Pepperdine. No. 50 Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus)
toppled No. 28 Elena Gantcheva 7-5, 6-1 in the win over UNLV. The
Rams’ record is now 14-3.
MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
The Rams put on a show at the Ram Invite, hosted at Sports Backers
Stadium this past weekend. VCU took home 10 individual victories and two
team victories. DeAngelo Wilson (Richmond/Prince Edward) won the 100-
meter dash, Allan Moody (Woodbridge/Garfield) won the 100-meter dash
decathlon, Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth/I.C. Norcom) won the 200-meter
dash, Donnie Seward won the 400-meter dash, Jay Wyss (Richmond/J.R.
Tucker) won the 5,000-meter run, Cordell Page (Richmond/Manchester)
won the 110-meter hurdles, the 110-meter hurdles decathlon, and the
shot-put decathlon, Brian Wallace (Portsmouth/I.C. Norcom) won the long
jump and Grant Matthews (Chester/Benedictine) won the discus-throw
decathlon as well as the javelin-throw decathlon. VCU teams won the
400- and 1,600-meter relays.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
The Rams performed exceptionally well at the Ram Invite, hosted at
Sports Backers Stadium this past weekend. VCU posted three individual
victories and two team victories. Danyelle Barnes (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen)
won the 100-meter dash, Whitney Key (Goochland/Goochland) won the
200-meter dash and Frankie Moore (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) won the
high jump. VCU teams won the 400- and 1,600-meter relay events.
