First knockout round: first leg

FC Schalke 04 1 – 0 FC Porto

Kevin Kuranyi’s strike in the fourth minute gave
the German side an early lead. The Portuguese
fought on with the help of Lisandro López and
Ricardo Quaresma but will have to wait until
March 5 to settle the score.

AS Roma 2 – 1 Real Madrid CF

The Giallorossi thwarted the Merengues in lieu
of their Liga Primera dominance. Goals from David
Pizarro and Roberto Mancini cancelled out Guti’s
and Raúl González’s combined brilliance.

Olympiacos CFP 0 – 0 Chelsea FC

Although John Terry and Frank Lampard
were left out of Chelesea’s starting lineup, the
London-based team fought hard in hostile territory
to earn a much needed clean-sheet ahead of the
second match day.

Liverpool FC 2 – 0 FC Internazionale Milano

The Anfield audience made sure their team
got the support it needed while facing the
toughest club Italy had to offer. After 30 minutes,
centerback Marco Materazzi was shown the red
card and Inter was reduced to 10 men. Goals in
the final minutes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk
Kuyt earned a sigh of relief from Liverpool coach
Rafael Benítez.

Celtic FC 2 – 3 FC Barcelona

Notoriously hard to beat in Glasgow, the Scots
succumbed to the sniper-like passing of Barcelona,
resulting in two stunners from Lionel Messi and
an authoritative strike from Thierry Henry.
Olympique Lyonnais 1 – 1 Manchester United FC
Lyon came out strong, dominating the first
half. Karim Benzema set the mood by netting a
goal early in the second. A late equalizer from
Carlos Tévez made sure Man U will be a little
more comfortable at home hosting their French
opponents.
