VCU Sports in Brief
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ESPN announced the Rams will
travel to Ohio to face the Akron Zips
for its O’Reilly Auto Parts ESPNU
BracketBusters match-up. The game
is scheduled for Feb. 23. Game time
and television information will be
announced next week. Akron is currently
16-5 and tied for first in the
Mid-American Conference.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Rams bounced back from a
home conference loss to Towson with
a 63-51 road win at George Mason on
Super Bowl Sunday. Both teams were
held to less than 40 percent shooting
in the first half, which led to a 21-21
tie at halftime. The Rams found their
shot in the second half, shooting 58.3
percent while holding the Patriots to
40.7 percent from the field. Quanitra
Hollingsworth (Chesapeake/Great
Bridge) registered a double-double
with 16 points and 13 rebounds
while Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore/Lake
Clifton-Eastern) scored a game-high 20
points and grabbed eight rebounds.
MEN’S TENNIS
After being defeated by the top
team in the nation Friday, the Rams
rebounded with a 5-2 decision against
No. 34 Oklahoma in Norfolk Sunday.
After VCU took the doubles point,
Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) and
Emil Lindgren (Stocksund, Sweden)
highlighted the singles matches with
6-1, 6-1 victories over their opponents.
The Rams are now 5-1.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Rams followed a successful 4X1
tournament with a bang, upsetting No.
9 Clemson 4-3 Sunday. Tatsiana Uvarova
(Minsk, Belarus) and Kateryna
Yergina (Kiev, Ukraine) both earned
victories over ranked opponents. No.
35 Uvarova defeated No. 85 Carol
Salge 6-2, 6-1 and Yergina beat No.
53 Federica van Adrichem 6-3, 7-5.
The Rams record improved to 7-0
with the win.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
The Rams continued to impress
early in the season after seven top-10
finishes at the Carolina Classic in
Chapel Hill, N.C., over the weekend.
The Rams were led by Kira Hauser
(Hillside, N.J./Hillside) and Natalie
Duncan (Alexandria/West Potomac),
who placed third and fourth in the shot
put. Hauser’s throw measured at 40’5”
while Duncan’s came in at 40’4”.
