VCU sports in brief.
MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
Senior Cary Chaffee (Richmond/Hermitage) and junior Guy Alton (New Kent/New Kent) both took home fourth-place finishes at the Penn State Invitational over the weekend. Chaffee finished with a time of 4:14.83 in the mile run while Alton stopped the clock at 2:27.12 in the 1,000-meter run. Sophomores Joey Wingo (Richmond/Lee-Davis) and Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) each took home top-10 finishes. Wingo finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:34.81 while Dybas finished ninth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:37.78.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
The Rams posted two wins and 14 top-10 finishes to place fourth overall out of 13 teams at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason on Saturday. Frankie Moore (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) won the high jump event with a 1.75-meter leap. Verniece Johnson (Mineral/Louisa) took home first in the long jump with a 5.84-meter jump. Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach/Salem) took second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.01.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Viktoria Konstantinova (Hanskovo, Bulgaria), sophomore Olena Leonchuk (Kiev, Ukraine), freshman Kateryna Yergina (Kiev, Ukraine), senior Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus) and sophomore Kateryna Malakhova (Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine) each won singles matches over the weekend in the VCU 4×1 Invitational. The teams of Malakhova and sophomore Laura Burns (Hertford, England), Yergina and Uverova won doubles matches. The pair of Burns and Yergina won two.
