Senior Jenna Harris (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) scored twice in the second half to lead the way for the Rams in  their season opening win, 4-1, on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon at Cary Street Field.

Fairfield took an early 1-0 lead on an assist from Molly  Byrnes that set up a short goal for Emily Janis over the shoulder  of senior goalkeeper Brittany LoVullo, 6:08 into the game.

Harris, who had four shots on goal, tied the game shortly  after halftime on a rebound from a corner penalty shot.

VCU took the lead on another corner penalty shot, this  time from junior Nikki Hollibaugh (Spotsylvania/Massaponax),  assisted by fellow junior Megan Sauder (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster  Mennonite).

The Rams put the game out of reach with an onslaught  of scoring late in the second half. Harris scored her second  goal unassisted, followed just a minute later by a tally  from sophomore Vicky Smith (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven).

The Stags had few answers to counter the Rams offense  and were out-shot 12 to two in the second, as much of the  action took place in the Rams’ offensive zone.

The win was the first for Kelly McQuade, who recently took over as the Rams’ head coach after being named the interim coach in December.

VCU will next take the field Friday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m., at  American University in Washington, D.C. The Eagles downed  the Rams, 2-1, when the teams last met in 2001.
