VCU, which finished shooting 563 after shooting 301 in the first round, was the only team to improve on its day one total. Juniors Daryl Chappell (Dinwiddie High School) and Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy) each finished tied for 10th place in individual play after each posted back-to-back rounds of 73.
Junior Jens Fahbring (Sollentuna, Sweden) finished in 21st place (77-73-150). Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina) finished with a total of 157, and junior Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway/Magna Visa High School) posted a total score of 163.
The contest was shortened to two rounds of 18 holes when inclement weather struck Monday.
Bolden showing flashes of stardom as rookie
The baseball team’s Jared Bolden (Lynchburg/E.C. Glass), a freshman pitcher and first baseman, was named CAA Rookie of the Week this weekend for the third time this season.
Bolden batted .600 (9 for 15) with three doubles, five runs and 10 RBI in the Rams four victories last week over Randolph-Macon and Georgia State. He also pitched for seven innings, allowing four hits, one run and two walks. He also struck out two batters.
Bolden, who leads the team in batting average hitting .467, has also earned a CAA Player of the Week award once.
Movin’ on up
Junior Arnaud Lecloerec (Plouhinec, France) became the second member of the men’s tennis team to earn CAA Player of the Week honors this season. Lecloerec, who moved up to the No. 15 spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, was recognized after his victory over Duke’s No. 5 Ludovic Walter last week. The Rams are also ranked No. 13 nationally.
Taylor hot to trot
Former men’s basketball standout Willie Taylor, who played for the Rams between the 2000 and 2003 seasons, has been selected to play for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Taylor is 13th on VCU’s career scoring list with 1,367 points and sixth on the career scoring average with 15.7 points per game. Fourth on VCU’s career list with 156 3-pointers, he was selected to first team all-CAA as a senior.
Taylor made his Globetrotter debut during the 2006 World Tour.
