Former VCU arts professor dies
Richard Carlyon, a former School of the Arts professor, died Friday after a battle with cancer. He was 75.
The New York native came to VCU in 1950 to study art. Carlyon began teaching at the university in 1955 and retired in 1996 as a professor emeritus. During his teaching career, he received several awards, including the Theresa Pollack Prize for Excellence in the Arts in 2001 and VCU’s Presidential Medallion in 2005.

Friends and colleagues remember his brilliance.
“Richard is part of the fabric of the VCU School of the Arts,” Joe Seipel, senior associate dean for student affairs, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “He will be desperately missed.”
Carlyon is survived by his wife of 44 years, a son and two sisters.
