Earlier this month, someone broke into a car near Oceana Naval Air Station and stole a silver suitcase holding moon rocks. The theft is not exactly a national tragedy, but it raises some interesting questions: What kind of a nerd steals moon rocks, and why?

If the plan was to sell them on the black market (ha ha) it won’t work, according to Ken Wilson of the Science Museum of Virginia.

“Any collector of space rocks will know that these are stolen and thus impossible to show or resell,” he told a reporter from Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Since the collectors are apparently too smart to fall for the old “I have some moon rocks to sell you” trick, maybe the thief is just showing off the loot to impress the ladies. There’s a $1,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest, so you know what to do in case anyone asks, “Hey, want to check out my cool moon rocks?”
