A recreational sports renewal

Susan Boling, VCU’s director of recreational sports, has been instrumental in helping to revitalize the recreational sports program.

Boling worked previously at the University of North Texas after graduate school, but what attracted her to VCU was the chance to build a program in an environment she wasn’t used to.

“I would be taking the entire program and building the Cary Street Gym from scratch,” she said. “They didn’t really have anything in the department but a little bit of intramural sports as an extension of the health and physical education academic program at the time when I came in 1984.”

Boling said the university has stood behind her decisions.

“I just feel rewarded with what we’re providing for the university community and how much enjoyment and benefit I see people getting from that.”
