Freshman Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz.) drilled 17 kills in 18 chances and no errors as VCU’s volleyball team defeated Liberty 3-0 (31-29, 30-23, 30-15) Tuesday night.
Her .944 attack percentage ties the second highest single game statistic in NCAA history for players with 15-19 attempts and sets a new VCU mark, breaking Jessica Burns’ record .900 (9 of 10).
Freshman Catherine Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) also had a huge night, registering 48 assists for the Rams, who won their ninth game in 10 chances.
Two other freshmen, Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) and Ana Luiza de Borja (Florianoplois, Brazil) contributed 16 and 14 kills, respectively.
The Rams (7-5 CAA, 15-9) tied the school record for conference wins by trouncing Delaware and Towson last weekend. The team looks to set a new mark this weekend as they host Northeastern Friday and Hofstra Saturday.
Power honored for second straight week
Freshman Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) is in a zone, and she was rewarded by being named CAA Rookie of the Week for the second straight time.
Power scored two goals and assisted on another last weekend as the Rams extended their home-unbeaten streak to 24.
Her goal against William & Mary tied the game with one second left in regulation to keep the streak alive.
The 16 points Power has amassed leads the Rams, and she is tied with Pernilla Jansson with 6 goals.
The Rams (8-0-1 CAA, 10-3-4) travel to Northeastern and Hofstra this weekend, looking to secure a regular-season conference victory.
